A few months ago I was in New York City with Jo, and I happened to meet Gabriele Grunewald( Gabe) as she was running through Central Park. She clearly knew what she was doing, so I got to talking with her and it turns out, she is actually a professional runner, come to find out, back in 2009 Gabe was diagnosed with Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma( ACC), a rare form of cancer — so rare that it only occurs in 3.5 out of every one million cancer patient. But from what I can tell, this young lady has n’t let her diagnosis or treatment slow her down for a minute.

Several days later, I decided to go on a good long jog, trusting that Chip would not leave Drake again, as I was on my way back, I saw Chip coming down the road. He rolled up to me with his window down and said, ‘Baby, you’re doing so good. I’m heading to work now. I’ve got to go.’ I looked in the back, thinking, Of course he’s got Drake. But I didn’t see a car seat.

’Chip, did you take Drake to the grocery store without any clothes on?’ Chip gave me a real funny look. He said, ‘What?’ I gave him a funny look back. ‘Oh my gosh,’ he said. ‘I totally forgot Drake was here. He was so quiet.’.

I remember when we first got married the only money we had was what was in Chip’s pocket, he always had a wad of cash, but we were broke. If I needed to go grocery shopping it’s whatever was in his pocket. That’s how we paid the bills.

I think when people have the freedom to tell their own story rather than trying to be specific to a certain design or style, there's more freedom, and it ends up feeling more like home. Those spaces we see in magazines and on the Internet are beautiful, but if there's not that story there, then it's going to lack that feeling of home.

I love the smell of clean laundry. Working in the garden and getting my hands dirty. Doing the dishes. These are the things that make me feel normal.

Be intentional with your space. Don't be afraid to step on a limb and design your home the way you love it.

Chip is the risk-taker. He's all about the big picture but with a get-it-done attitude, and sometimes I'd rather play it safe and really focus my energy on the details.
