One of my surgical giant friends had in his operating room a sign "If the operation is difficult, you aren't doing it right." What he meant was, you have to plan every operation You cannot ever be casual You have to realize that any operation is a potential fatality.

And the improbability of any complex organ being produced and brought to perfection in any such way is an improbability of the same kind and degree as that of producing a poem or a mathematical demonstration by throwing letters at random on a table.

Stem cells are probably going to be extremely useful. But it isn't a given, and even if it were, I don't think the end justifies the means. I am not against stem cells, I think it's great. Is the Church inimical to science? Growing up as a Catholic and a scientist - I don't see it. One truth is revealed truth, the other is scientific truth. If you really believe that creation is good, there can be no harm in studying science. The more we learn about creation - the way it emerged - it just adds to the glory of God. Personally, I've never seen a conflict.

In my experience as a clinician, as well as some studies that have been undertaken, many of the individuals who are family members have symptoms, though they may not have complained of those symptoms to their doctors, sometimes because they did not realize they were an abnormality and sometimes because they were never asked, in that circumstance, I often find in my practice that patients who go on a gluten-free diet, who themselves did not even appreciate the symptoms, often feel better.

That's something we've shown before but (were) never able to show it in more detail with regard to the timing - the change seems to have happened around 2000.

What was curious is the fact that it just seems to be a practice more common in African Americans, for example, who are extremely unlikely to have celiac disease, so it probably reflects a lifestyle choice as opposed to a medical reason.

In my clinical experience I see some people go on a gluten-free diet because they genuinely feel better when they're gluten free. Sometimes it may be because they're eating less, they’re eating healthier - more fresh real foods as opposed to fast food.

But I certainly tell patients that if they go to the trouble of learning what gluten-free is and they embrace that whole lifestyle they’re probably likely to eat healthier anyway.
