Today, on the 18th anniversary of 9/11, while the state was honoring first responders, Republicans called a deceptive, surprise override of my budget veto.

We are heartsick that anyone would act with such disregard for human life, but with your help we will find a way to remember their presence.

When storms are becoming more fierce, it is not enough to pick up the pieces. We trust you as teachers. Now we need to put our money where our trust is.

For over a year now, House Bill 2 has been a dark cloud hanging over our great state, it has stained our reputation. It has discriminated against our people and it has caused great economic harm in many of our communities.

Right wing culture wars are now taking on even more significance because Supreme Court has tossed what were once protected constitutional rights into the political battlefield, a zip code should not determine a woman's reproductive rights, but that's where we are right now.

Today's order by the state Supreme Court restores faith in the rule of law and it is necessary for the Court to rule on the constitutionality of these unfair districts before the next election.

For the second time this week, we have seen a shooting in a North Carolina school, our prayers are with the victims, their families and all the students of Mt. Tabor High School in Winston-Salem.

Federal officials should continue to thoroughly investigate the shooting of Andrew Brown Jr. in Elizabeth City, our state should pass specific laws to increase transparency, confidence and accountability in the justice system.
