For about a week it seemed as though the institution had been rocked to its foundation.

And she looked at me like that, those eyes. And you know, she stared me down, and I will never forget that moment. We broke this poor lady's heart -- I broke this poor lady's heart. You know, not receiving her baby in the middle of the Aegean Sea.

As a lifeguard, you want to help everybody, it's your job -- your job is to kind of look at everybody the same, irrespective of their language, their race, their religion or creed.

You know, they say everything in their eyes, they can't verbalize it because they've got so many mixed emotions going on.

And they start crying, and they start realizing that, 'I'm not going to get bombed.' It's hard to put it into a context of words that would have any meaning unless you've seen it with your own eyes.

The death of the Princess of Wales was a most extraordinary period in British national life.

I think these have been really quite significant changes that we now accept but at the time they were quite significant leaps.

What struck me was that essential view that the institution was as solid as a rock but it needed to evolve.

The key to the change has been anticipating what's coming next, the lesson of these last 20, 30 years has been for the institution always to be slightly ahead perhaps of where the British people are.
