I was assigned to a medical unit and was part of a group receiving men returning from theater headed to hospital care, many forever maimed with life-altering wounds. It made a strong impression because wounded men and body bags come back to home districts, not Washington, D.C., and accordingly, there is no more sacred vote than those surrounding war where life hangs in the balance.

I do think we ought to be incremental. Are there very troubling charges out there ? Yes. Do they need to be investigated ? Yes. But to jump to conclusion and say( Trump) needs to be impeached, what he's done is treasonous, is to say we're not going to go through the very process that the founding fathers laid out.

I think it strengthens it. What the administration is basically said -- what the President Donald Trump campaign has said is : it was just Bill Weld for a while, it's a voice crying in the wilderness, it's -- pay it no attention. All of a sudden, when you end up with three candidates and three different candidates saying there's something wrong with this presidency, what's going on here is not consistent with the Republican Party that we know about, believe in and invested major portions of our life in, that's a different conversation.

The President said we're not going to touch the very things that drive debt and spending, so I think that we're walking our way into one heck of a financial storm and there's no discussion.

I did meet Maria Butina, a few interactions were pleasant, it's the girlfriend of a guy I've known for 30 years. She seemed nice enough.

We always have a big crowd at our farm for Thanksgiving, sort of a family-plus event, and so I invited him to come down, he brought his girlfriend.

Without the president having legislators' backs, there's no way they're going to take the risks that would be inherent in a major reform bill.

But I do think The Lead's humbling, one, in this case the President was booed by colleagues in the House who basically said we don't go along with what the President is suggesting, and two, I think that there's a bigger message for all of us to take away from what occurred that goes well beyond the President's comments, well beyond the election of the 1st District, and that is the importance and the value of dissent in our political system.

It's a very tribal environment right now, the playing field of ideas that many of us came into in the class of'94... it's devolved to : are you for or against the President, are you for or against Trump ?
