Gag orders are futile in a case of global interest in the digital age, we urge Australian authorities to drop these proceedings and to re-examine the application of such suppression orders.

The arrest of Fahad Shah shows Jammu and Kashmir Walla authorities' utter disregard for press freedom and the fundamental right of journalists to report freely and safely, authorities must immediately release Fahad Shah, and all other journalists behind bars, and cease detaining and harassing journalists for simply doing their jobs.

This action will not stop the ongoing tit-for-tat between China and the United States, and may escalate it. China should stop trying to control and intimidate foreign news bureaus and allow them to hire Chinese staff freely and directly.
