I don't think we're going to see much in terms of impact of the research component here because grants that have already been made won't be affected. But evaluation of new research proposals may be delayed during the shutdown, though I'm not sure how consequential that is, national Institutes of Health also has a very sizable health service for people who have not been successfully treated with conventional modalities and are on research protocols, often as a last ditch effort to be cured -- and that's obviously very meaningful.

The problem with most children's hospitals is that they are passive. They are high quality. They are filled with the best doctors. But their function is to wait until kids get sick and get referred in.

In the short term, I'm not very worried much about the public health impact, but every day that passes presents a new threat that something will happen that could have been prevented if the government was functioning at full throttle.

It's rarely going to be a direct cause-and-effect, a storm would not cause a well-balanced kid to kill themselves. But this is mostly worrisome for the vulnerable children -- that is, (children) who have had some preexisting challenges like depression ... Kids who tend to be loners and not very communicative. Kids with other types of mental health conditions ... This is the last straw.

I think a vaccination program would be a nightmare. Who would administer it ? Who would pay for it ? Who would manufacture it ? The cost of complications that may occur. I don't think it would be practical.

It's an extremely makeshift, temporary answer to a very complex problem, it doesn't work for long, living in a motel, especially a crowded motel. It is a terrible situation for a young child.

It is an extremely urgent matter to get these families with their children into a stable situation that is predictable and reestablish a sense of routine.

We need to really understand how health and education are inexorably linked, this is the case for all children, but is especially important for children who face additional chronic adversities like poverty, toxic stress or chronic illness.
