We are taking all possible steps to protect children in an environment with many bad actors, we are balancing speed with safety and will err on the side of safety.

This program learned an invaluable lesson in 2014 because of the backup at the Border Patrol stations. I think it's an amazing turnaround story in terms of federal programs.

Usually, numbers increase because of migration patterns. This time they were increasing because of policy change.

All children in our care, the first thing we do when they come to an HHS shelter within 24 hours is ensure they are connected to a parent or a family or loved one. So, the parent or family member can know the child is safe and secure and where they are.

Last year, 55 percent of children were released to a parent, 36 percent were released to a close family member and the remaining 9 percent were released to a distant or non-relative sponsor.
