I think Russia is dangerous, not a superpower. I know what the president is trying to say. I worked for him for five years, not just two.He doesn't want us to overreact. He doesn't want to go back to the Cold War and some superpower competition. But my own view, and I think General Mattis stated something similar today, is that Russia is a challenge for the United States. It is a threat to some of our allies.

Vladimir Putin knows exactly what he wants from the relationship with USA. In return for good relations, he wants lifting of sanctions, ratification, approval of his wars in Ukraine and Syria, and his dream of dreams, an acknowledgment of his sphere of influence in Ukraine and the former Soviet Union.

The administration has a pretty good policy towards Russia, just the president doesn't agree with it.

President Trump spent most of his life not working on foreign policy. President Putin has spent most of his life working on foreign policy and national security issues, by virtue of what they've done with their lives, he's behind and he needs to prepare.

His interpretations are flawed and have some empirical pieces missing, but he's effective when he tells those stories.

I hope that he would think about first: what is our objective in Ukraine? What is our objective in Syria? And secondarily, how do I go about achieving that in my meeting with Putin?

We had a period of cooperation with the Russians several years ago, we're now in arguably one of the most confrontational periods we've been in since deep in the Cold War.
