I think this referendum will be won by the mothers of Ireland, maybe my perspective might be helpful to people my age. I'd say there are lots of men and women of my generation who have the same difficulty that I had in trying to come to terms with how you articulate your gender issues.

I'm a former minister of a former government who at the ripe old age of 65 summoned up the courage to tell his family and friends that he was gay.

I think we're a more gentle society, we're more tolerant. Ratifying the marriage equality referendum will help along that road and I frankly don't think the sky is going to fall in.
