This is a global challenge, of course we can do what we can to defeat acts of hatred, violence and racism in our own domestic areas. But, as an international community, we should also be united against acts of hatred, violence and terrorism.

Technology is moving quite quickly. We may not have all of the responses we need now, but we need to work on them and we need to work together, that's why this call to action is not just about regulation, but instead about bringing companies to the table [ and saying ] you have a role too and we have expectations of you.

When it came to the way this attack was specifically designed to be broadcast and to go viral,( responding) to that needed a global solution, so that was why we immediately got in contact with international counterparts.

We've built a practical consensus across government that creates a plan for the next 30 years, which provides the certainty industries need to get in front of this challenge.

Arguably these categories should always fall within the community guidelines of hate speech, but nevertheless it's positive the clarification has now been made in the wake of the attack in Christchurch.

Having said that, I'm pleased to see that they are including it, and that they have taken that step, but I still think that there is a conversation to be had with the international community about whether or not enough has been done, there are lessons to be learnt here in Christchurch and we don't want anyone to have to learn those lesson over again.

It is important that no stone is left unturned to get to the bottom of how this act of terrorism occurred and what, if any, opportunities we had to stop it.

On 15 March our history changed forever. Now, our laws will too. We are announcing action today on behalf of all New Zealanders to strengthen our gun laws and make our country a safer place, all semi-automatic weapons used during the terrorist attack on Friday 15 March will be banned.

We represent diversity, kindness, compassion, a home for those who share our values. Refuge for those who need it.
