Our most effective response to terror and to hatred is compassion to unity, and it's love.

Americans across our country are feeling a sense of helplessness, of uncertainty and of fear. These feelings are understandable and they are justified. But the answer must not be violence. The answer is never violence. Rather, the answer - our answer, all our answer - must be action. Calm, peaceful, collaborative and determined action. We must continue working to build trust between communities and law enforcement. We must continue working to guarantee every person in this country equal justice under the law.

The verdicts today should send the message that within the police department there is no greater betrayal of the badge and of the brotherhood than to ensnare another officer in a web of lies and deceit.

We want to take a hard look at the ease with which wrongdoers can get their hands on deadly weapons and the frequency with which they use them.

He said it's clear to me that there is a cadre of senior people in New York who have a deep and visceral hatred of Secretary Clinton, i'm just troubled that this issue, meaning the, the New York agent issue and leaks, I am just troubled that this issue has put us where we are today with respect to this laptop.

The televising of the police dogs and the fire hoses on young people then was a motivating factor and wake-up call really for people within the U.S. and outside the U.S. to really face the issues of racial unrest in America, similarly we're at a situation where viewing these videos, viewing these incidents of misconduct, of deaths occurring -- hard as they are to see -- is giving an opportunity to talk about this. And frankly, it's giving law enforcement the opportunity to step forward, to be accountable and talk about what is and is not effective policing.

I think if you talk to people who live in communities that deal with these issues all the time, they will say to you that what these videos are showing us now is what people in many minority communities have been talking about for years, and what they've been describing for years, but they haven't been believed, they have been dismissed, mainly because people don't want to believe that law enforcement can overstep. And of course, it's not every law enforcement officer. But when it happens, the impact that it has, the gash that it leaves, in the web of trust that we need in order for everyone to feel safe, is tremendous. And so that's why these incidents resonate so deeply.

I've worked with police, I've worked with agents. I've also worked with communities who have dealt with these issues over the years that I've been involved in law enforcement, it can be done. It takes commitment from both sides.

A lot of the things that are talk about are visible today because, quite frankly, we have visibility into situations that we didn't always have -- the witness with the cell phone, the security camera.

We do try and focus more on what people do as opposed to the inimitable characteristic of who they are, i'm sure there will be a lot of ink spilled on this in the days to come. What I would say is when it comes to religious tests for things as important as transiting borders, that that would be inconsistent with the American values that this administration is trying to uphold.

I can't say definitively right now what led either of these two people to pick up guns and become murderers, we're looking at everything we can find out about these two killers' lives - how they grew up, where they grew up, how they met.

To ask me to have my FBI director or other members of the administration make personal guarantees would effectively grind the program to a halt.

Separate and apart from the pending indictment, our investigation remains active and ongoing, and has in fact expanded since May, the scope of our investigation is not limited and we are following the evidence where it leads.
