It seems that they are no longer focused on putting Huawei out of business or hurting their overall profitability, but restricting them in 5G, but can the administration really confirm that ? And then do they have a longer term strategy to achieve this ?

I'm unsure that calling what was announced by President Trump an agreement is justified, if they couldn't agree on a text, that must mean they're not done. Wishing an agreement does not one make. This isn't a skinny deal. It's an invisible one.

I've never seen China respond with concessions to someone throwing down the gauntlet in this manner, it suggests to me that the U.S. may have determined that progress was impossible so everyone is just going through the motions.

You can't count up innovations that didn't occur, so we won't be able to know for a while what the consequences are for Huawei of disengagement from the United States, it's like oxygen, you're never really sure how significant it is until you don't have it.

Perhaps they're hoping for a change of administrations, a change of priorities, but I think there is a consensus that Huawei is a problem... and that concern is going to outlive Trump.

We have a huge, dynamic community of researchers and funders and universities and opportunities to test drive different technologies, that's why United States is one of the world's leading innovators.

I think really American-China policy is only unified with a single person in the White House, it's unpredictable. It can flip-flop. I don't think American policy has finally settled in one place where we have decided to treat Communist China as an enemy across the board.

I think the Trump administration is quite serious about imposing tariffs, i don't think Liu He would have agreed to come if he was just going to give the U.S. a lecture.

We can't be sure whether this constitutes a major cave or success because we don't know the details of what has been negotiated. But ... agreeing to extend negotiations a few more weeks definitely is in China's interests, at this point, the U.S. has likely gotten all it's going to get out of China.

These weren't sufficient to satisfy the U.S. negotiation team. So we'll see if the Chinese give any more on those or if they still try to focus on sweetening the purchases side, and hoping that Trump bites on the potential big numbers.

The minimum baseline for judging whether this week is a success is whether they can have an in-depth conversation on those areas.

But they won't take advantage of it in that way, and they could be back to the same period we were in three months.

The Chinese have said orally through a variety of channels what they truly want to offer will be surprising to the upside, but they have not put any of that on paper, but I don't think The Chinese are going to make the kind of concessions the Trump administration wants.

Donald Trump's delivered, it would be very unlikely The Trump administration would issue a major decision that would directly be in conflict with that strategy.

These actions are meant both to increase leverage in the current negotiations and as a deterrent to others, united States isn't going follow the standard playbook any longer because it has only emboldened China.
