According to ancient mythology, trees link the Earth to the sky. In this respect trees link humans to another world.

Trees are, after all, our largest and oldest living things. They are Australia's natural, national treasures - the true Elders of our vast continent.

Intensity 1 is you dont feel it ; intensity 2 is some people may feel it ; intensity 3 is many people do feel it.

We don't feel we should be removing contested claims even when we believe they may be false, there are a lot of concepts being tested because we don't know what is going to work.

The idea is if we can harness the accelerometers in those smart phones then we can collect massive amounts of data. It could really revolutionize how we understand earthquakes and earthquake effects.

So the amount of warning time we might be talking about depends of course on where you are relative to the earthquake. We are talking about seconds, tens of seconds, best case scenario is a few minutes before and earthquake, tens of minutes potentially for tsunamis.

MyShake cannot replace traditional seismic networks like those run by the U.S. Geological Survey, but we think MyShake can make earthquake early warning faster and more accurate in areas that have a traditional seismic network, and can provide life-saving early warning in countries that have no seismic network.

We want to make this a killer app, where you put it on your phone and allow us to use your accelerometer, and we will deliver earthquake early warning.

Now, ShakeAlert only issues alerts when four of our traditional seismic stations are triggered, but if we also have mobile phone data, maybe we would need only one station to trigger before issuing an alert.

We can use that data to understand the physics of the process beneath us, how the buildings around us respond to these earthquakes, and we will have more data than we have from the traditional seismic networks.
