Louis Malle was the best filmmaker I've ever worked with. He was such an artist. He was dealing with the theme of innocence and experience.

I’ve always been human, and I got so used to self-deprecation that it started to take a toll on my psyche and just me in general.

It was important for you to see this is my 56-year-old body and to fight the retouching, i ’m always like, ‘ You better keep it honest. ’ And we did.

I worked so hard with my trainer Ngo Okafor, we did 5 a.m. workouts, but I was n’t drinking so it was easier to wake up in the morning. I pushed it to the limit. My ego helped ! I thought, ‘ If you do these pictures and you are not happy with what you see, you ’ll be hard on yourself. ’.

When you start off in a relationship, it's like this -- it's magnetic, and then all of a sudden, it's about having children. And then your body is really your babies. And you're bigger, and you sort of are, like, oh, I wonder if that's sexy.

For the past almost 20 years, I’ve been coming more into my own, i don’t spend time with people I don’t want to spend time with anymore. I don’t spend time doing things I don’t want to do. I don’t make movies that don’t make me happy.

[ My mom ] was like, ‘ Do you want to put on these jeans and do a commercial ? ’ it was going to be [ a lot of ] wordplay, or historical and literary references. There was a real intellectual spin on how they were going to produce [ the ads ]. Nobody was allowed on set. Because it was Avedon’s first foray into the commercial world. I think he was pretty nervous. Stakes were pretty high and I think there was a lot of pressure. We did multiple, multiple takes of everything.

I can get into them, but it looks painful, i recently found them, [ but ] I think the last time I fit into them comfortably was probably while I was in ‘ Wonderful Town ’ on Broadway [ back in 2004 ]. They’re so high-waisted.

The campaign was extremely successful, and then the underwear overtook the jeans.
