I just feel like I'm going to be criticized regardless of what I do next, so I might as well do something that I feel really passionate about.

I missed out on the Spice Girls. I missed out on all those big pop phenomenon and missed out even on the Madonna records. It's okay, cuz I'm playing catch-up on everything now.

I did my gospel record, but there was nothing really of it. Maybe a hundred people bought it. But it's one of those things on the internet that people find and they make into a big deal.

Like my freedom. If I feel like I'm being controlled, I get crazy. Because I know I made it this far by following my intuition. I think people like who I am, and I like who I am, and I want to be a better version of myself every single day. So stop controlling me!

My mom has prayed for me my entire life, hoping I ’d come back to God, i never left Him, I was just a little bit secular, I was more materialistic and more career-driven.

I get really offended at the concept that what came out of the election was that — how do I say this? — impoverished people who are not of color needed more attention. When people sing back the words that you’ve written that have been so personal to you… and they sing them back with such confidence and belief, you’re like ‘Oh God I’m not alone in my own problems,’ and it makes me feel connected to humans, and at our primal state we all we want is connection. It’s the only reason that we do anything that we do.

I really think, like everybody has their opinions on these shows and there is a multitude of them, but I don’t want to be like super shady, but you can name 10 people -- at least -- that have come off ‘American Idol’… that have legitimate careers, that put out music, that have changed their journey, their destiny, affected people’s lives.

We’ve really changed, conversationally, in the past 10 years, we’ve come a long way. Bisexuality was n’t as talked about back then, or any type of fluidity. If I had to write that song again, I probably would make an edit on it.
