Syria is a civil war. Syria began as a popular uprising, just like the other experiences in the Arab Spring, with a repressive government that responded by basically killing the protesters. It's not a genocide, it's a war, and there's a difference. Genocide is a preplanned attack on people because of who they are. This is a interstate conflict.

There are plenty of meetings, receptions, dinners, and so if you are [at the U.N.] any length of time, and I was there for four and a half years, you formed pretty significant relationships with people from all over the world. And that's important to the work you do. If you're trying to rally the General Assembly to vote for something that matters to the United States, those personal relationships count.

There was nothing hidden. There was no effort to or reality of misleading, there is nothing that Ben or the president or I or anybody who was involved in explaining the Iran deal to the American public said that wasn’t factually correct. The notion that there was any ball to hide or spin to put on it, I think, is really misguided.

There were occasions when I would receive a report in which a U.S. person was referred to -- name not provided, just U.S. person, and sometimes in that context, in order to understand the importance of the report and assess its significance, it was necessary to find out or request the information as to who that U.S. official was.

I know nothing about this, i was surprised to see reports from Chairman Nunes on that count today … So today, I really don’t know to what Chairman Nunes on that count was referring. But Chairman Nunes on that count said that whatever Chairman Nunes on that count was referring to was a legal, lawful surveillance and that it was potentially incidental collection on American citizens.

I think it unlikely that China wants to be seen by the international community as the protector of North Korea given its recent outrageous behavior, given that, I expect that they will indeed come on board with significant new sanctions and we're working toward that end.

We call upon the international community to stand together and demonstrate to North Korea that its reckless actions must have serious consequences.

North Korea's launch using ballistic missile technology, following so closely after its January 6 nuclear test, represents yet another destabilizing and provocative action and is a flagrant violation of multiple United Nations Security Council resolutions.

We support this agreement and its full implementation, and believe this comprehensive resolution is an important gesture of healing and reconciliation that should be welcomed by the international community.

I don't think anybody expects a single outcome that all of a sudden readily resolves all these difficult issues, we're looking to try to use these venues to make incremental progress toward the objective that we all seek.
