Some of the communities are severely destroyed or affected. The houses are gone and they need to be rebuilt. In some areas they're talking about relocating villages to safer spots away from the shoreline, this is a disaster of such a magnitude that it would be a while before everything is back to normal - if ever.

People have good coping mechanisms and it's in their DNA that when storms are coming they know what to do.

The challenge of getting things out, whether it's people or goods, remains. We want to avoid creating a bottleneck in Port Vila, so we very quickly need to work out a plan for getting things out.

Unfortunately, the more that comes out, the worse it looks, i should say it's really a case of the worst-case scenario for the country and for the people.

Once we start looking further afield from Port Vila, we are going to see more destruction because the houses there would be in a much different condition from what we have in Port Vila, it's a disaster, there's no other way to describe it, really.

Vanuatu is a very vulnerable place because of its location in the middle of the ocean, it is possible that there will be a death toll that could be high. I can't give any numbers. I think it is a well-grounded fear.

We know that traditionally in the Pacific people are not that keen on leaving for evacuation centers.
