So far, Chicago Police have risked discouraging other survivors of hate crimes from coming forward.

At the end of day, officers in their badge and uniform enjoy the benefit of the doubt, unless we start holding officers accountable for using deadly force in a reckless manner, I think it will be very difficult to see changes in the use of lethal force at the outset.

As the case is now remanded to the district court for further development of the facts, we will remain vigilant to ensure that officials do not exploit this moment to alter redistricting maps in ways that undermine democracy.

We should not use this as a moment to dilute the unique problem of long standing discrimination and violence directed toward groups on the basis of race in our country.

Inquiries regarding stops and detentions and arrests pose unnecessary barriers for vast numbers of African Americans, given the racial disparities that we see across our criminal justice system.
