The world is looking a lot more dangerous and uncertain for America's safety in the last two, three years, i do think there is an increased appreciation even among debt hawks that we want a wider margin of error, we want a stronger military in order to deter challenges to America's security.

Conservatives, Republicans have to rebuild public confidence in what we say we are going to do. That is a high hurdle but it is an achievable hurdle.

It's a welcome development that the president is paying attention to the war crimes that are being committed by the Assad regime and by their supporters in Iran and in Russia.

I think deconfliction with the Russians is probably the maximum that we can do. But deconfliction is enough to prevent us killing Russian soldiers when we are attacking the Assad regime.

There is really an enduring tension between the two, but it is certainly true that at least since Ronald Reagan, the reflexes of conservatism are for more defense spending, not less.
