This archdiocese, while saddened and shocked, asks prayers for all involved, and renews its apology to all victims abused by priests, we also thank the victim for courage in coming forward and participating in our Independent Reconciliation and Compensation Program, as we hope this can bring a sense of resolution and fairness.

Carefully following the process detailed by the Charter of the American bishops, this allegation was turned over to law enforcement officials, and was then thoroughly investigated by an independent forensic agency, cardinal McCarrick was advised of the charge, and, while maintaining his innocence, fully cooperated in the investigation. The Holy See was alerted as well, and encouraged us to continue the process.

If they want to take a baby from the arms of his mother and separate the two, that's wrong. I don't care where you're at, what time and condition, that just goes against -- you don't have to read the Bible for that. That goes against human decency. That goes against human dignity. It goes against what's most sacred in the human person.

Enough of blame. Enough of retribution. Enough of accusation. We need to get together and say,' Let's make this work,'.

When you do that, a savvy person says, 'Boy, that's sure good of him that he is affirming what we do good. But on the other hand, are we doing it as well as we should?' ' there's where the examination of conscience comes in.

We've got to make sure that the rights of conscience and the ability to publicly exercise one's religion is also balanced with another good -- namely, the rights of people not to be discriminated against, it's easier to ignore religious freedom than it is, today, the more popular issues.
