Today, as the Senate did before them, the House of Representatives has served the state of South Carolina and her people with great dignity, i’m grateful for their service and their compassion. It is a new day in South Carolina, a day were can all be proud of, a day that truly brings us all together as we continue to heal, as one people and one state.

During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices.

Some people think that you have to be the loudest voice in the room to make a difference. That is just not true. Often, the best thing we can do is turn down the volume. When the sound is quieter, you can actually hear what someone else is saying. And that can make a world of difference.

No one who is willing to work hard, abide by our laws and love our traditions should ever feel unwelcome in this country, at the same time, that does not mean we just flat out open our borders.

Our family hopes the people of South Carolina will join us in staying away from the disruptive, hateful spectacle members of the Ku Klux Klan hope to create over the weekend and instead focus on what brings us together.

Now there's more reason to come to this state, i am proud to say that it's a new day in South Carolina.

These grounds are a place that everybody should feel a part of, what I realized now more than ever is people were driving by and felt hurt and pain. No one should feel pain.

I remember how bad that felt. And my dad went to the register, shook their hands, said 'thank you,' paid for his things and not a word was said going home. I knew what had just happened, that produce stand is still there and every time I drive by it, I still feel that pain. I realized that that Confederate flag was the same pain that so many people were feeling.

What I can tell you is over the last three and a half years, I spent a lot of my days on the phones with CEOs and recruiting jobs to this state, i can honestly say I have not had one conversation with a single CEO about the Confederate flag.

I don't think this is going to be easy. I don't think that it's going to be painless, but I do think that it will be respectful, and that it will move swiftly.

The hate-filled murderer has a sick and twisted view of the flag, we have changed through the times and we will continue to do so, but that doesn’t mean we forget our history.

What happened in this case is not acceptable in South Carolina, nor is it reflective of our values or of the way most of our law enforcement officials act, this is a sad time for everyone in South Carolina, and I urge everyone to work together to help our community heal.
