I know we're going to have some very, very frank conversations quite clearly around the table.

The American administration has made a decision today that we deplore, and obviously is going to lead to retaliatory measures, as it must, we regret that. We would much rather move together in partnership.

There was the broad lines of a decent win-win-win deal on the table, that I thought required that final deal-making moment.

We have to believe that at some point, common sense will prevail, unfortunately, the actions taken today by the American government do not seem to be headed in that direction.

I am - even more than I was with steel and aluminum - trying to figure out where a possible national security connection is, taking that a step further into autos seems to me to be on even flimsier logical grounds.

Our intelligence and security agencies came back with a very clear recommendation that they didn't feel the transaction should proceed for national security reasons and as we said we would, we abide by that decision.

We don't want trade with China any which way at any cost. We want the right kind of trade deals with China and dealing with security issues...should be and would be part of any mature relationship we try to establish with one of the world's largest and growing economies.

To be honest, we are down to a point where there is a good deal on the table, it's right down to the last conversations. ... I'm feeling positive about this, but it won't be done until it's done.
