The suggestion that Australia, by having some trade-off where we could have higher emissions reduction targets, which would destroy jobs in regional communities, if we did that, then we wouldn't be having these fires. That is just not true.

Climate change is a global phenomenon, and we're doing our bit as part of the response to climate change, to suggest that, with just 1.3% of global emissions, that Australia doing something differently – more or less – would have changed the fire outcome this season, I don't think that stands up to any credible scientific evidence at all.

He is a free citizen, he can say whatever he likes, but that doesn't mean he can't have regard to the grievous offence this would have caused to people whose homes have been burnt down.

The devastating and horrific fires that we have seen, particularly in New South Wales but also in Queensland, have been absolutely chilling.

I would warn against any sort of over-analysis or over-reaction to those comments because they just simply reflect that we're two different countries.

That's why I think our relationship with China will always remain positive, because it's focused on the things we agree on and that benefit each country, not on the areas that I think there are clear differences. And of course there are clear differences.

We are living in a world of transition where a shifting of power dynamics is taking place, which means our friendship and partnership with countries like Fiji, in our own backyard, is even more important.
