It's an article of faith in Tinseltown: when liberals get mired in scandal, it's because they are tragically flawed; when conservatives get in trouble, it's because they are evil.

Sometimes the enormity of war overwhelms the truth that all great struggles are just the sum of individual stories. Each is more than just the story of one soldier's service and sacrifice. Their service ripples across their families, friends and their communities. Memorial Day reminds us it is the noble sacrifice of many that makes us who we are.

I think it's very unlikely that we're going to see a trade war between the United States and Mexico because it's in nobody's interest to see a trade war.

The reason why you debate those things is that it defines your level of interest ; that defines how much resources you're willing to invest, a government can't do everything, so differentiating between what's truly vital and what's nice to have is important.

It's as logical to have a debate about how you rank, order rights as you have a debate about how you rank, order interests.

The goal on defense and foreign policy is not to lose votes, people want somebody that's going to be competent, someone they can trust.

If Afghanistan is left to its own without military assistance or financial support … there is the potential we could sweep back to where we were before.

I think a successful Afghanistan is really key in limiting the threat that comes out of Pakistan and eventually have some kind of emergence of Pakistan that is less destabilizing to the region.

We are still operating under the 2011 strategy and the problem with that is even if we drive ISIS out of Iraq, the [Obama] administration will just basically go back to sleep. They are not treating this for what it is – a global, Islamic insurgency, we have to go to the source … until radical Islam is defeated, it’s just going to be ‘whack a mole’ for a generation … until we stop that radical ideology that is fueling them, this is never going to end.

I simply think it’s too soon and, more importantly, we have to ask ourselves a question: ‘Is ISIS more or less dangerous if they are rising or falling?’… even if ISIS is losing that actually might make them a greater transnational terrorist threat.
