What we're trying to get to the bottom of, is how did the assessment on December 5 that they gave us, how did it radically change -- with the major change being that specifically that the Russians were trying to get Donald Trump elected, and that's what we're trying to get to the bottom of, it's just a major shift we need to understand and we're the oversight body.

I don't talk about intelligence.

I believe it is in the best interests of the House Intelligence Committee and the Congress for me to have Rep. Mike Conaway, with assistance from Reps. Trey Gowdy and Tom Rooney, temporarily take charge of the committee's Russia investigation while the House Ethics Committee looks into this matter. I will continue to fulfill all my other responsibilities as committee chairman.

What's important is that this committee does its investigation on a bipartisan basis to get to the bottom of things and go investigate all things Russia. That's what this committee is going to do.

I think we're near agreement on bringing in both the witnesses that we want and the witnesses Nunes wants. Prior to doing that, we need to get the documents from these witnesses so that we'll understand what questions we want to ask. Obviously some of these folks we may only get one crack at.

This business is always hard and politics is always hard, but I'm used to that, i don't really listen to what anyone says. I was very clear and transparent with all of you, and the statement still stands -- which is: I had a duty and obligation to go tell the President of the United States.

That's not asking for immunity, i mean that's not a direct request for immunity from what I can see. Look, all that happened is there was an initial discussion about scheduling -- that was it. I think people just jump on this based on things that get leaked or half-truths.

I needed a place I could go and find this information and review it … There was no sneaking around.

As somebody who supports our national security apparatus, it bothered me that this level of information would be included in intelligence reports, because it just wasn't necessary, from my point of view -- legal or not.

I recently confirmed on numerous occasions the intelligence community incidentally collected intelligence.

This is a normal, incidental collection, based on what I could collect, this appears to be all legally collected foreign intelligence under.

We're working on the next stage but that's not yet. Right now we've given people the opportunity to come forward freely to testify publicly, you know this week, next week, and then at that point we have to decide where we go from there.

I don't think that's a problem, at the end of the day there could be disagreements, which I expect there to be disagreements -- you're not going to get 435 members to agree on anything. I think there will be some things we can agree on, some things we won't be able to agree on, but at the end of the day I think we'll be able to put together a useful report.

At the end of all that you'll have people in separate corners, and, honestly, look, a lot depends on the FBI. What are they actually going to get? Now, obviously they said they have an investigation, well great -- go investigate, tell us what you have.
