We are not going to see any major break in these heavily Sunni areas in Iraq until the U.S. is able to get the Sunnis back on board. And that is also going to involve some arm-twisting on the Shia leadership in order for them to give a little bit to the Sunnis.

What we saw was the Maliki government eviscerate the leadership of the Iraqi Army. When they continue with these anti-Sunni pogroms to get rid of … these people, it made it very difficult to keep any sort of cohesion.

These are guys that likely spun off from the Taliban. for them, aligning themselves with the Islamic State’s ideology is much more in line for them, more so than with Al Qaeda’s ideology.

There are a tendency for these people to become more radical and that is what we are seeing right now with these guys who either have a problem with the Taliban leadership or discouraged by their lack of progress.

The problems are not going to go away as long as the ideology of jihadism … continue to try and destabilize and take over governments … we really need to work with our allies in the region … to work towards an ideological solution where Muslims themselves can undercut the ideology of jihadism.

When we take all these little puzzle pieces together and we assemble our mosaic, it's very clear that they're having issues. ... I believe that they are hurting.

You see these disenfranchised people, and it’s a very good recruitment pool, (Jihadists) are looking for angry, underemployed guys. It’s a good target audience for them.
