The financial crisis has underscored how insufficient attention to fundamental corporate governance concepts can have devastating effects on an institution and its continued viability. It is clear that many banks did not fully implement these fundamental concepts. The obvious lesson is that banks need to improve their corporate governance practices and supervisors must ensure that sound corporate governance principles are thoroughly and consistently implemented.

There will be another general and public round of health checks (for banks) next year, but this could affect less than the 123 banks that we are supervising directly.

Partly because of the financial situation in Europe and partly because of the structure of the banking systems in Europe ... the sustainable profitability is probably the main challenge and the main risk for banks in the coming years, they have to establish sustainable profitability.

A lot of significant losses were taken in places that were of small importance vis-à-vis the rest of the group, we are not considering that one category of business model is better than another.
