The ones that really stand out are the ones that aren't very well known, but should be, i visited Nahanni National Park in Canada last year, which was really amazing. Nahanni National Park in Canada was one of the first 12 World Heritage listed back in 1978, yet few people know about Nahanni National Park in Canada.

Many archeology and paleontology sites are often disappointing, because the things that made them famous have been dug out of the ground and are now in museums. it is by far the most ambitious World Heritage site I've visited.

There is a lot of politics and money in play, rich countries tend to have more World World Heritage. Also, as the obvious places have been put on the list -- Great Wall, Grand Canyon, Pyramids, etc. -- ever more marginal sites have been added.
