The vital question is what we will do next.

Several years ago when I would raise this issue there was a sense of invulnerability, a church member might say that clergy abuse is a Catholic Church problem, or that it never happens in The Catholic Church. I very rarely hear that now.

My earliest memories are watching Franklin Graham preach on television as a very small child. I remember being struck as a child with the gravity with which he took the Gospel. That continued with me for the rest of my life, when I met Dr. Franklin Graham, that same sense of weightiness of the Gospel was evident in him personally – just as it was in public.

Billy Graham was, in my view, the most important evangelist since the Apostle Paul. Billy Graham preached Christ, not himself, not politics, not prosperity, what Billy Graham taught us is all summed up in the invitation hymn sing at Billy Graham crusades across the nation : ‘ Just as I am, without one plea, but that Thy blood was shed for me, ’.

The problem is that many secular people think that all evangelicals are alike, when there are multiple streams and theological and generational divides within evangelicalism.

The difference between me and my parents' generation, the culture warriors, is that I actually know people on the other side, and I like them.

Anyone who cares an iota about religious liberty should denounce this reckless, demagogic rhetoric, the government should close the borders to anyone suspected of even a passing involvement with any radical cell or terrorist network. But the government should not penalize law-abiding people, especially those who are American citizens, for holding their religious convictions.

They're looking for someone who will lead with justice for the common good ... which is one of the reasons why I'm not spending a lot of time asking politicians to outline for me their personal testimonies, which I think in the past has often led to politicians learning what evangelical testimonies sound like in order to win evangelical voters, that in and of itself is not an issue for me.

Someone who has divorced two wives, someone who has been involved in the casino industry that is predatory of the poor, and yet says that he has nothing to be forgiven of, nothing to apologize for, i think that speaks to someone's character.

It's important to recognize that people you don't agree with aren't necessarily bad people. They just might be wrong, there's no reason to personalize everything, demonize people.

And they assured me he did not have any authority to approve those sorts of grants and that he wouldn't, he was simply participating with Bloomberg in terms of education issues.

In the past, candidates could quote from hymn books and talk about personal faith in a way that evangelicals would respond to. I don't think that's going to work anymore, they are looking for a candidate who understands religious liberty and who can lead a massive bureaucracy.

The cross and the Confederate flag cannot coexist without one setting the other on fire, white Christians, let's listen to our African-American brothers and sisters. Let's care not just about our own history, but also about our shared history with them.

I don't think a candidate is going to be able to get very far simply by using evangelical lingo or by pointing to his or her personal faith, i think a candidate is going to have to explain how he or she would protect religious liberty and would appoint justices and judges who will maintain the common good.
