First, the virus may not be detected until a patient shows signs of disease, which can be 40 or more years from the time that they were infected. During these 40-plus years, an infected person can unknowingly spread the virus to others, second, some of the people who are most affected today live in remote parts of the world with minimal access to early detection options and state-of-the-art health care.

I believe that now is a critical time to support continued research and application of that research to take us over the goal line in the fight against this deadly virus.
