When you look at the 10-month-long deployments, the carrier gaps coming up in the Middle East and the Pacific, or the fact that the Marines are considering deploying on foreign ships, it is difficult to escape the conclusion that our Navy is being stretched too thin.

I’ve been wanting for some time to make sure we have a deep penetrating strike capability. It is vitally important that we get this right and not just settle for an ISR capability. The key thing is we’ve got to be very careful about taking things off the table at the beginning because our potential adversaries or competitors are not going to take things off the table.

We need to increase the amount of funding we have and I am optimistic that we will be able to move forward with another LXR, probably this year.

What you will have done is take enormous capability off the table if you go with the requirements that they are locking in now. What you will be locking into is something that is a little more than a high-class surveillance vehicle that will fly over our aircraft carriers for 20 to 30 years down the road, many people feel we need to have something that is more integrated into the air wing if we are going to keep our carriers viable and if we are going to get through A2/AD defenses (anti-access/area-denial).

Since the tragedies, the Department of Homeland Security was established to prevent terrorist attacks within the United States, and most importantly, to share intelligence information among government agencies and departments.
