This work is important, it requires constant education, constant training, constant motivation, constant inspiration that we have to give, not just to keep our people happy but keep them reminded of the value of the work we do. So, recruiting is only part of it. Retaining good people is the other half that we don't often talk about.

I speak to them from the standpoint of a friend or a sister, as a regular human being. I try to be as relatable as possible and let them know that they are heard.

The fear is that they could lose everything for making a mistake on the job, even if they don't have ill will intent, many officers then take the position that it's not worth it to be in this profession.

That's the one protection that officers have that makes them willing to go out and do this work, they are being asked to go and deal with violent situations and compelled to perform these jobs on behalf of the city.
