The suggestion that Australia, by having some trade-off where we could have higher emissions reduction targets, which would destroy jobs in regional communities, if we did that, then we wouldn't be having these fires. That is just not true.

Climate change is a global phenomenon, and we're doing our bit as part of the response to climate change, to suggest that, with just 1.3% of global emissions, that Australia doing something differently – more or less – would have changed the fire outcome this season, I don't think that stands up to any credible scientific evidence at all.

We regard this release as one of a series of confidence-building measures that are taking place in Afghanistan, we hope that such measures will set the stage for a ceasefire and intra-Afghan dialogue.

He is a free citizen, he can say whatever he likes, but that doesn't mean he can't have regard to the grievous offence this would have caused to people whose homes have been burnt down.
